I don't know about you but the first few weeks of the school year seem to have whizzed by (maybe less so if you're a teacher as well as a mum) and it's almost the half term holidays.
The kids are ready for a bit of down-time, a little while to do nothing very constructive at all, and that’s great for a day or two. But, before long, you’re going to want to pull on your boots and head out.
Here are just a few of my personal suggestions for family activities local to this part of Yorkshire that you might want to consider.
A great venue to satisfy your children’s creative urges is Clayfever (www.clayfever.co.uk) in Tadcaster where Jess will guide you in decorating a piece of ceramic to take home and treasure forever.
There are a wide choice of ceramics that you can choose from including teapots, plates, mugs, animal figures and even gnomes!
You can have a go at using a variety of tools to create different artistic styles and effects or just get messy and make a handprint memento.
You could very well leave with the perfect birthday or Christmas present for a grandparent; a unique piece made with love and imagination.
A little further afield Beningbrough Hall ( https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/beningbrough-hall-gallery-and-gardens) is always a great family day out.
I know that my boys and their cousins have had hours of fun here. As well as a fantastic playground and cafe, endless gardens and a family-friendly Georgian House, Beningbrough has plenty of half term activities to offer.
These include storytelling, bushcraft, broomstick making, birds nest craft and the intriguingly titled “Nearly Naked Treewalk”! Check their website for specific days and times.
Knaresborough Castle is a favourite for us too - lovely green space, fascinating castle with a rich history and stunning views of the railway bridge that kept my youngest (big train fan) engaged for hours, literally.
And on top of all that, they are running all sorts of halloween arts and crafts activities exploring magic and potions, and spooky story trails.
Don't forget that the best things in life are often free. The end of October in our lovely Yorkshire is a beautiful month to wrap up and get outdoors to kick leaves, hunt for conkers and climb those nearly naked trees.
It’s also a great month to experiment with photography.
Take some action shots of the kids throwing leaves at the camera or use the gorgeous autumn sunlight to create warm photographic effects where no filters are needed.
Or, let me do the work for you and book in for one of my family photoshoots – I'll bring the camera, you just have the fun.
My family photoshoot fee is £50, which includes a 1hr session, travel to the location and professional post production of your images.
Digital images and products are extra. Click here to find out more information.
Happy half term – have a great time whatever you choose to do.
